Why Empire is the Best Show on Television

Fox’s new show Empire just ended its first season Wednesday. It has become one of the highest rated freshman shows on Fox, or for that matter, any network. Why is Empire one of the best new shows on television?

Ratings Through the Roof

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire has become a ratings giant this season, ending its season finale with 16.7 million viewers. It is up with AMC’s The Walking Dead as one of the top shows among adults 18-49. Empire has had the best first season result on any broadcast network since Grey’s Anatomy ended in 2005, that’s TEN YEARS ago!

African-American Characters

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

While show’s like Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder are bringing fantastic African-American characters to network television, Empire stands out with an predominately black main cast. The only exception being Andre’s wife, Rhonda. Also, this is not just an average family. The Lyons are in charge of a major record label in Chicago that they created from the ground up. While some of their motives are questionable, this rags to riches story places a hard-working, wealthy African-American family with power and influence on prime time television.

Strong Female Roles

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire also brings strong female characters to the table. Probably the most talked about character this television season is Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious’ ex-fiancé back from a 17-year jail sentence. She is not only a manager and business woman, but a mother as well. I’m not sure if Empire would be the same without tuning in every week to hear Cookie call Anika “Boo Boo Kitty”. Anika is also in charge with Lucious and manages many of Empire’s artists. Along with Cookie and Rhonda, these women are motivated, driven, and achieve success on their own terms.

LGBT Themes and Visibility

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

There has always been an issue of being gay in the hip-hop community. However, director Lee Daniels doesn’t shy away from the issue on Empire. The story arc of one of the main characters, Jamal Lyon, deals with him coming out as a gay artist and dealing with homophobia from the music community and even his own father. The show not only shows the struggles with being a gay man, but also being a black man under the scope of the public eye. We also learn that Tiana Smith is bisexual and in love with a woman while posing as Hakeem’s girlfriend. Empire doesn’t just present gay characters, but connects them with relatable issues, like raising a family and maintaining relationships.

A-List Guest Stars

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire knew they were going to have to grab great talent in order to cover a show about the music industry, and they do not disappoint. We see artists from different genres and points in their career. Legends like Courtney Love, Gladys Knight, and Patti LaBelle grace the show with their talent, along with current artists Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Jennifer Hudson, Rita Ora, Estelle, and Juicy J. We even see many great actors and celebrities make an appearance like Cuba Gooding Jr., Raven-Symone, Naomi Campbell, and Gabourey Sidibe. With Lee Daniels teasing Selma stars Common and Oprah Winfrey herself, Empire is pulling out all the stops.

Chart Topping Music

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

With Timbaland serving as the Executive Music Producer on the show and countless artists circulating Empire’s doors, you know the soundtrack is going to be fantastic. Just like Fox’s musical counterpart Glee, Empire is producing music that has a life of its own on the charts outside the show. The season one soundtrack has just hit number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart, beating out Madonna’s new album Rebel Heart. This is music you would hear on the radio and dance to in clubs. Empire is not just a fictional record label, its changing music outside of network television.

Empire will be back for Season 2, but for now, that’s it for Season 1. Any questions?

My Favorite Things of 2014 – Youtube

With Youtube becoming so popular in today’s media and being a Youtuber myself, I had to have a list showcasing the best of Youtube for 2014. From huge productions companies to a person sitting in front a computer weekly, it’s hard to narrow down a list of my favorite Youtube channels with so many out there. Every channel is so vastly different, it’s impossible to rate one higher than the other. I made my decision on the entertainment value of their videos, which channels I frequently visited throughout the year, and the dedication of the personality to make their channel go above and beyond the standards on Youtube. These solo, duo/collaboration, and vlogging channels not only produce creative content, but stand out as innovators to go where no other channel has gone before.

With the millions of videos on Youtube every year, even daily, it was hard to narrow down my list. I’m sure there are many great videos this year that I have missed. I tried to collect a playlist of videos that reflected the best of my favorite Youtube personalities from the past year in solo videos, collaborations, and music videos. I looked for videos that were unique, creative, and either entertained or told a story with a strong message. These videos set out to change the minds and views of the public or to make you laugh and smile. This year, Youtubers tackled issues including sexual harassment, rape, gay marriage, LGBT issues, race, and gender issues. They also collaborated to create incredible music videos and hilarious skits that rivaled the entertainment shown on other media. These are, in my opinion, my favorite videos of 2014.

My Favorite Things of 2014 – Theatre

Broadway brought a superstar season , filled with amazing shows and great performances. Musicals brought the best of Hollywood to the stage, from mobsters to boxers. From revivals to new works, these shows broke boundaries of the typical musical. Hedwig was brought to Broadway for the first time. Tupac brought hip hop, an unlikely genre, to Broadway. We also watched the music of the 1920’s jazz scene and Carole King brought to life. Here are my favorite musicals of 2014.

  7. Rocky the Musical

2014 also brought amazing plays to Broadway. Curious Incident uses fantastic special effects to tell us the story of a 15-year-old boy with Asperger syndrome. Revivals of famous shows like Of Mice & Men, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Elephant Man were given new life with Hollywood talent and brand new productions. These plays told the stories of drag performers, a modern gay couple,  and young adults living in the city. These are the best plays of 2014.

These actors and actresses are a mix of Hollywood greats and Broadway favorites that gave phenomenal performances in last years plays and musicals. President Lyndon B. Johnson, musicians Billie Holiday and Carole King, famous film icon Rocky Balboa were portrayed to perfection. We saw a transgender rocker, a kind-hearted hired hand, a disfigured man, a reformed prisoner, and a comedic genie. Women brought strong characters and performances that dominated the stage and the Tony Awards. From veterans Kelli O’Hara and Idina Menzel, to newcomers Lena Hall and Margo Seibert. My Favorite Things of 2014 – Television

I don’t watch a lot of TV during the year, but when I do find a show I like I’m fully invested in it. The year 2014 brought a year of new television that broke boundaries and broke mediums. We are now seeing programming on the internet through Netflix and Amazon Prime, bringing stories that you wouldn’t normally find on network television. What I’m Listening To – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

It’s after Thanksgiving! The dust has settled after Black Friday and it’s time to bust out the Christmas music! (I mean, I listen to Christmas music all year, but that’s just me…) For this blog, I’m going to give you all the music I have been listening to this holiday weekend, in order to get you pumped for the holidays! From old to new, here are my favorite Christmas albums and songs for you to ring in the season!

That’s Christmas To Me- Pentatonix

81aPKJ3QHgL._SL1500_

Starting out this list with one of my favorite groups, Pentatonix. This accapella group won the third season of NBC’s Sing-Off and have exploded into the music scene. Not only have they just released PTX Vol. III, but they have also released a new Christmas album this year. They have amazing arrangements of classic carols that will make you dance all the way to Grandma’s house! Don’t miss this album, it’s fantastic.

Favorite Songs: Silent Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy feat. Tori Kelly

Holiday Wishes – Idina Menzel

HolidayWishesAlbumCover

Another new album, Frozen star and Broadway star Idina Menzel has released a holiday album with her favorite songs for the season. Her voice is incredible and she definitely holds her own with other artists in the music scene right now. I can’t wait for the next couple of years for her to release another album and appear on the Billboard charts, because it’s long overdue for Idina Menzel to be recognized for her amazing voice and talent.

Favorite Songs: Baby It’s Cold Outside feat. Michael Buble, All I Want For Christmas Is You, Do You Hear What I Hear

Wrapped in Red – Kelly Clarkson

20131203165728!Wrapped_in_Red

Last year, Kelly Clarkson released one of my favorite albums to listen to during Christmas time. Seriously, I think this is the only music my mom and I listened to last December, because it was THAT good. She mixes a list of classics and new songs, using her country and pop roots to create a wide variety of hits. Be sure to add this to your Christmas playlist! You won’t be disappointed!

Favorite Songs: Wrapped in Red, Run Run Rudolph, My Favorite Things

Christmas – Michael Buble

MichaelBuble-Christmas(2011)-Cover

I don’t know any Christmas car ride that isn’t complete without this album by Michael Buble. He brings back the jazz standard and big band sound with the energy of a new generation of artists. He puts his own touch on this songs while still giving them the classic holiday carol feel. If you are looking for a blend of new sound and tradition the whole family can enjoy, don’t miss this album.

Favorite Songs: Jingle Bells feat. The Puppini Sisters, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Cold December Night

Costume Contest – Majoring in Halloween

Last weekend was my favorite holiday of the year, Halloween. Now some might think it’s too late to make a post about Halloween, but I say why not! I wanted to make a post about some of my favorite Halloween costumes this year. Being surrounded by theater students, my friends pretty much major in the dark arts, so I found it hard to pick my favorite costumes, but alas, here they are:

Jack Skellington and Sally – Levi Parks and Sammi Shelton

Jack Skellington

Levi has amazing make up skills and he recreated a character from one of my favorite movies. From the suit to the miniature Zero, I love his take on the Pumpkin King. Sammi also did an amazing Sally-inspired dress. Two design tech majors = amazing couple costumes.

The Flintstones – Jessica Conrad (Pebbles), Eaton York (Fred), Mikaela Salcedo (Wilma), Conor Korbisch (Bamm-Bamm)

Flinstones

The musical theater majors always turn it out, but I love the costumes these four did for the Flintstones. The patterns are basically identically, they all look amazing. They really are the modern actor family.

The Mario Brothers – Shea Pender (Luigi), Reagan Pender (Mario), Laura Girard (Peach)

Mario Peach and Luigi 3

Mario and Luigi 2  Mario Peach and Luigi

When coming up with a Halloween costume, it makes it easier when you have a brother. The Pender’s decided to join forces and do the famous Mario Brothers from the Nintendo games, with Laura Girard as Princess Peach. This shows that when doing Halloween, it’s best to keep it in the family.

The Fairly Oddparents – Isaac Beauchamp (Wanda), David Cole (Timmy), Emily Kipp (Cosmo)

Cosmo Wanda Timmy

Cartoons seem to be a recurring theme this year, but that doesn’t mean the costumes are any less good. Actor/director duo Isaac and Emily decided to gender swap Cosmo and Wanda from the popular Nickelodeon cartoon. Senior actor David Cole joined them as Timmy Turner.

Sugar Skull – Anthony Sullivan

Anthony Sullivan

Just because you graduated, doesn’t mean you don’t get a shout-out on my blog! My friend Anthony, who just graduated two years ago as a Musical Theater major, did this make-up for a classic sugar skull. I love how the picture makes the blue pop in his recreation of this Mexican tradition.

Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus – Ashley Flowers

Ashley Flowers

My best friend can LITERALLY make anything, so I’m not surprised she put together this amazing Ms. Frizzle costume. From her pet lizard Liz to the miniature school bus, this costume is everything! There is a reason why we treat her hair as its own separate entity, it was meant for this role.

Beetlejuice, Undead Fairly Oddparents, Skulls – Taylor East

Skull 2Skull 1Taylor East 1Cosmo and Wanda 1

Though there have been many amazing costumes, I have crowned Taylor the QUEEN of Halloween this year. Taylor East is a senior directing major and her creativity knows no bounds. What I love about these costumes is the pictures and make up are so professional looking; I was blown away when I saw these on Instagram last weekend. The pink hair doesn’t hurt either. From her twist on the Fairly Oddparents to the two face skulls, even her female inspired Beetlejuice, she had the best costumes this year by far.

Looking at the subtext behind subText

We live in a world where technology is right at our fingertips. It makes since that plays would start emerging about our dependence of these devices. My friend Tyler Dwiggins wrote a play that started as a one-act, which soon became the play subText I got to see last weekend. Its one thing to graduate from college, but to have your play included in their season is another. After seeing subText, I knew exactly why this story was being told.

subText is a play about high school, about dating in a time where a relationship is only a text or a tweet away. For these high school students, popularity meant the perfect selfie and the most likes on Instagram. While subText uses comedy to guide us through trials and tribulations of teenage life, we laugh out of our familiarity with these characters. I remember texting under the desk in high school and my biggest accomplishment of my first year was getting a Facebook. This play takes our obsession with technology and pop culture and puts it right in front of us, literally! The actors interacted with audience members like we were classmates and friends in the lunchroom. We were brought back into the world of high school, for a moment I thought I was late for fifth period.

At the center of these scenes of bad dates and prom dresses, there was the character of the hopeless romantic Cameron. Through texting and selfies, he was out to impress his lab partner. While his friend Dani brings up the important questions, like if his lab partner is actually interested in men, Cameron is convinced he has found his true love. The rest of his peers echo this importance of technological romance throughout the rest of the show.  In the last scene Cameron is visiting his grandmother and they start a conversation about the letters she has from her husband. She tells Cameron that before technology, they wrote letters back and forth to each other. Though Cameron thinks that would be difficult, she explains that they did it because they had to, because they love each other.

While there is plenty of humor within subText,  the actually “subtext” doesn’t shy away from  commenting on our communication in the 21st century. We spend so much time talking to each other behind a screen, that we have forgotten about the basis that communication started on. We forget about face to face conversation and the feeling we get from actual human interaction. While there is nothing wrong with technology, subText reminds us that sometimes we need to build up the courage to tell someone how we feel beyond 140 characters.

What I’m Listening To – Dirty Pop

As a big music fan, I’m always searching for new music. I love getting music suggestions from friends and the internet. So I decided that every two weeks or so, I’ll post a blog about the music I’m currently listening too. Get ready for tons of cheesy pop music.

                Beyonce – Beyonce

I have always been a Beyonce fan, and her surprise album last year is her best work yet. Though many people criticized her Video Music Awards performance, I loved how she showcased her new album. Of course we want to hear “Crazy in Love” again, but her greatest hits were for her Super Bowl Half Time show. She has some really amazing songs on this album. If you have the time, sit down and listen through it all, (just skipping to Drunk and Love doesn’t count.)

Favorite Songs: Partition, Haunted, Pretty Hurts

                ARTPOP – Lady Gaga

Yes, I know, you are thinking, “really, the new Gaga cd, are you insane?” I think ARTPOP was really under appreciated. Lady Gaga really stretched out and explored other genres on this album. On Born This Way, she explored country and rock, but on ARTPOP we are hearing hip hop, rap, and electronic/dance influences. She explores all spectrums of the art world, both critiquing it and celebrating it. Take Donatella and Fashion. One points out the flaws in the fashion world and the other makes you want to strut the catwalk. So if you weren’t a fan the first time, I encourage you to give it another listen.

Favorite Songs: Donatella, Swine, Fashion

                Talk Dirty – Jason Derulo

I’m so glad Jason Derulo is back after his 2012 injury. Not only is he back making music, but topping the charts and releasing an amazing EP turned album. Though short, every song on this album is a hit, from dance music to ballads. Jason has his own unique style of music that translates so well into his album. I’m a fan of pop music, but an even bigger fan of pop music done well.

Favorite Songs: Trumpets, Talk Dirty, Bubblegum

5 Seconds of Summer – 5 Seconds of Summer

This Australian group of teens may have toured with One Direction, but they are not another boy band. With artists like All Time Low and Green Day as there musical influences, 5SOS are here to bring back and reinvent the punk genre in mainstream music. At first, I was not excited about a “punk Justin Bieber group,” but after listening to She Looks So Perfect, I’ve learned they are much more. With cleaver lyrics and an edgy pop sound, Five Seconds of Summer is definitely one of my favorite new artists of 2014.

Favorite Songs: Amnesia, Don’t Stop, Kiss Me Kiss Me
