Why Empire is the Best Show on Television

Fox’s new show Empire just ended its first season Wednesday. It has become one of the highest rated freshman shows on Fox, or for that matter, any network. Why is Empire one of the best new shows on television?

Ratings Through the Roof

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire has become a ratings giant this season, ending its season finale with 16.7 million viewers. It is up with AMC’s The Walking Dead as one of the top shows among adults 18-49. Empire has had the best first season result on any broadcast network since Grey’s Anatomy ended in 2005, that’s TEN YEARS ago!

African-American Characters

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

While show’s like Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder are bringing fantastic African-American characters to network television, Empire stands out with an predominately black main cast. The only exception being Andre’s wife, Rhonda. Also, this is not just an average family. The Lyons are in charge of a major record label in Chicago that they created from the ground up. While some of their motives are questionable, this rags to riches story places a hard-working, wealthy African-American family with power and influence on prime time television.

Strong Female Roles

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire also brings strong female characters to the table. Probably the most talked about character this television season is Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious’ ex-fiancé back from a 17-year jail sentence. She is not only a manager and business woman, but a mother as well. I’m not sure if Empire would be the same without tuning in every week to hear Cookie call Anika “Boo Boo Kitty”. Anika is also in charge with Lucious and manages many of Empire’s artists. Along with Cookie and Rhonda, these women are motivated, driven, and achieve success on their own terms.

LGBT Themes and Visibility

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

There has always been an issue of being gay in the hip-hop community. However, director Lee Daniels doesn’t shy away from the issue on Empire. The story arc of one of the main characters, Jamal Lyon, deals with him coming out as a gay artist and dealing with homophobia from the music community and even his own father. The show not only shows the struggles with being a gay man, but also being a black man under the scope of the public eye. We also learn that Tiana Smith is bisexual and in love with a woman while posing as Hakeem’s girlfriend. Empire doesn’t just present gay characters, but connects them with relatable issues, like raising a family and maintaining relationships.

A-List Guest Stars

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

Empire knew they were going to have to grab great talent in order to cover a show about the music industry, and they do not disappoint. We see artists from different genres and points in their career. Legends like Courtney Love, Gladys Knight, and Patti LaBelle grace the show with their talent, along with current artists Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Jennifer Hudson, Rita Ora, Estelle, and Juicy J. We even see many great actors and celebrities make an appearance like Cuba Gooding Jr., Raven-Symone, Naomi Campbell, and Gabourey Sidibe. With Lee Daniels teasing Selma stars Common and Oprah Winfrey herself, Empire is pulling out all the stops.

Chart Topping Music

Why Empire Is The Best Show On Television

With Timbaland serving as the Executive Music Producer on the show and countless artists circulating Empire’s doors, you know the soundtrack is going to be fantastic. Just like Fox’s musical counterpart Glee, Empire is producing music that has a life of its own on the charts outside the show. The season one soundtrack has just hit number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart, beating out Madonna’s new album Rebel Heart. This is music you would hear on the radio and dance to in clubs. Empire is not just a fictional record label, its changing music outside of network television.

Empire will be back for Season 2, but for now, that’s it for Season 1. Any questions?

What I’m Listening To – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

It’s after Thanksgiving! The dust has settled after Black Friday and it’s time to bust out the Christmas music! (I mean, I listen to Christmas music all year, but that’s just me…) For this blog, I’m going to give you all the music I have been listening to this holiday weekend, in order to get you pumped for the holidays! From old to new, here are my favorite Christmas albums and songs for you to ring in the season!

That’s Christmas To Me- Pentatonix

Starting out this list with one of my favorite groups, Pentatonix. This accapella group won the third season of NBC’s Sing-Off and have exploded into the music scene. Not only have they just released PTX Vol. III, but they have also released a new Christmas album this year. They have amazing arrangements of classic carols that will make you dance all the way to Grandma’s house! Don’t miss this album, it’s fantastic.

Favorite Songs: Silent Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy feat. Tori Kelly

Holiday Wishes – Idina Menzel

HolidayWishesAlbumCover

Another new album, Frozen star and Broadway star Idina Menzel has released a holiday album with her favorite songs for the season. Her voice is incredible and she definitely holds her own with other artists in the music scene right now. I can’t wait for the next couple of years for her to release another album and appear on the Billboard charts, because it’s long overdue for Idina Menzel to be recognized for her amazing voice and talent.

Favorite Songs: Baby It’s Cold Outside feat. Michael Buble, All I Want For Christmas Is You, Do You Hear What I Hear

Wrapped in Red – Kelly Clarkson

Last year, Kelly Clarkson released one of my favorite albums to listen to during Christmas time. Seriously, I think this is the only music my mom and I listened to last December, because it was THAT good. She mixes a list of classics and new songs, using her country and pop roots to create a wide variety of hits. Be sure to add this to your Christmas playlist! You won’t be disappointed!

Favorite Songs: Wrapped in Red, Run Run Rudolph, My Favorite Things

Christmas – Michael Buble

MichaelBuble-Christmas(2011)-Cover

I don’t know any Christmas car ride that isn’t complete without this album by Michael Buble. He brings back the jazz standard and big band sound with the energy of a new generation of artists. He puts his own touch on this songs while still giving them the classic holiday carol feel. If you are looking for a blend of new sound and tradition the whole family can enjoy, don’t miss this album.

Favorite Songs: Jingle Bells feat. The Puppini Sisters, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Cold December Night

What I’m Listening To – Dirty Pop

As a big music fan, I’m always searching for new music. I love getting music suggestions from friends and the internet. So I decided that every two weeks or so, I’ll post a blog about the music I’m currently listening too. Get ready for tons of cheesy pop music.

                Beyonce – Beyonce

I have always been a Beyonce fan, and her surprise album last year is her best work yet. Though many people criticized her Video Music Awards performance, I loved how she showcased her new album. Of course we want to hear “Crazy in Love” again, but her greatest hits were for her Super Bowl Half Time show. She has some really amazing songs on this album. If you have the time, sit down and listen through it all, (just skipping to Drunk and Love doesn’t count.)

Favorite Songs: Partition, Haunted, Pretty Hurts

                ARTPOP – Lady Gaga

Yes, I know, you are thinking, “really, the new Gaga cd, are you insane?” I think ARTPOP was really under appreciated. Lady Gaga really stretched out and explored other genres on this album. On Born This Way, she explored country and rock, but on ARTPOP we are hearing hip hop, rap, and electronic/dance influences. She explores all spectrums of the art world, both critiquing it and celebrating it. Take Donatella and Fashion. One points out the flaws in the fashion world and the other makes you want to strut the catwalk. So if you weren’t a fan the first time, I encourage you to give it another listen.

Favorite Songs: Donatella, Swine, Fashion

                Talk Dirty – Jason Derulo

I’m so glad Jason Derulo is back after his 2012 injury. Not only is he back making music, but topping the charts and releasing an amazing EP turned album. Though short, every song on this album is a hit, from dance music to ballads. Jason has his own unique style of music that translates so well into his album. I’m a fan of pop music, but an even bigger fan of pop music done well.

Favorite Songs: Trumpets, Talk Dirty, Bubblegum

5 Seconds of Summer – 5 Seconds of Summer

This Australian group of teens may have toured with One Direction, but they are not another boy band. With artists like All Time Low and Green Day as there musical influences, 5SOS are here to bring back and reinvent the punk genre in mainstream music. At first, I was not excited about a “punk Justin Bieber group,” but after listening to She Looks So Perfect, I’ve learned they are much more. With cleaver lyrics and an edgy pop sound, Five Seconds of Summer is definitely one of my favorite new artists of 2014.

Favorite Songs: Amnesia, Don’t Stop, Kiss Me Kiss Me
